Profile

His pace has earned him comparisons to Shane Bond and although that in itself is a huge compliment, Andy McKay may have soon realised that he has huge shoes to fill if he indeed nurses hopes of replacing the former Kiwi pacer who once battled for the tag of ‘fastest bowler in the world’.

McKay debuted for Auckland in 2002 but was so injury-prone that he was hardly involved in his team’s first four seasons. But he turned over a new leaf in 2007-08, picking up 24 first-class wickets and followed it up with 23 in the next. His performances impressed New Zealand’s then skipper Daniel Vettori who gave him his first break in the ODI series against Bangladesh in 2010. McKay didn’t disappoint, picking two wickets on debut and finished the series with five scalps. He also came in contention for the Test series against Australia before an unfortunate stress fracture ruled him out for three months. He made a comeback into the national side with an impressive T20I debut in 2010 against Sri Lanka bagging figures of 2-20.
