In an era, when the Indian cricket team’s batting credentials against good pace bowling was largely a suspect, Sunil Gavaskar’s entry to the team as an opener was a Godsend. Arguably one of the most technically perfect batsmen of the world, Sunny – as he was popularly called – Gavaskar was the first cricketer in the world to surpass the 10000 run mark in Test matches. Not only this, Gavaskar averaged more than 50 in his Test career, and his sometime, dull and boring batting was an absolute necessity to guide the team to safety.

Gavaskar’s average of around 65 against the pace battery of Holding, Marshall, Garner and company, at their peaks, made him stand out from the rest of the pack. However, Gavaskar’s best Test innings – according to many an expert – came in his last Test match against Pakistan, when on a turning track he scored an amazing 96. His slip fielding was safe, and he became the first Indian cricketer to take over 100 catches in Tests.

However, if there was one thing that could be held against the batting great, it was his dour batting in ODIs as well. His innings of 36 not out off a whopping 174 deliveries earned him a lot of flak, but this was the way he continued batting till his penultimate ODI, when he cracked the then fastest World Cup hundred against New Zealand running a high temperature. After retirement, he has taken to commentary, column writing and also holds a position within the ICC. This has led to some controversy about his contradicting roles.
