Profile

An all-rounder, Anthony McGrath started his first-class career with Yorkshire in 1995 at the age of 19. He had a successful start to his career as in his second season, he hit 999 runs which meant that he was included in the England A tour of Pakistan.

McGrath helped Yorkshire win the County Championship in 2001. He not only impressed with the bat but also with his useful swing bowling. He finished with the best average - 18 wickets at 27.66 in Yorkshire Championship in 2002. He was made the captain of Yorkshire in 2003 and also rewarded with the England Test cap the same year. McGrath had a blistering start to his Test career as he scored 69 in his debut innings and scalped 3/16 against Zimbabwe at Lord's. He went on to hit another half-century in his next Test against the same opposition at Chester-le-Street. This meant that he won a place in the ODI side too and he made his debut against Pakistan in Manchester in June 2003.

Inconsistencies meant that McGrath soon fell out of selectors' favour. He still battled it out for his county side Yorkshire and his best came in the 2005 and 2006 where he scored 1425 runs at an average of 59.37 and 1293 runs at an average of 61.57 respectively. He was again made the captain of Yorkshire in 2009 but was then replaced by Andrew Gale after just one season. The Yorkshire stalwart finally called it quits to his 17-year long career in 2013.
