Jimmy Adams: Top batsman, unsuccessful captain
Former West Indies skipper Jimmy Adams was born on 9 January 1968 at Port Maria, St Mary, Jamaica. Adams scored 3012 runs at an average of 41.26 in his 54-Test career; but after his 12 Tests, only Sir Don Bradman had a better record than his 1132 runs at 87. He was a steady left-handed batsman, useful left-arm orthodox spin bowler and good fielder, especially at gully; but by the mid-1990s, Adams began to struggle at the international level. Adams was appointed as West Indies captain in 2000, replacing Brian Lara. He would not last long, leading the team to a 5-0 series loss on the 2000/01 tour of Australia; after the tour he lost both the captaincy (to Carl Hooper) and his place in the national team. Adams was appointed head coach at Kent in January 2012.
