Javagal Srinath: Keeping pace with the times
Former India fast-medium bowler Javagal Srinath was born on August 31, 1969 at Mysore. He was perhaps - with due respect to Kapil Dev - the first bowler who extricated India's attack from the mire of military medium pace.
A vegetarian, who spent his first overseas tours in desperate searches for home-tasting 'rasam', Srinath evolved into a genuine quick who thrived on bouncy pitches outside the sub-continent.
It may well have been his legacy of chin music that inspired a generation of Indian youngsters to take up fast bowling, in a climate where batsmen alone were deified. When he drew the curtains on his 11-year international career in 2003, Srinath was second only to Kapil in number of Test wickets by an Indian paceman.
Srinath took 236 wickets at an average of 30.49 and strike rate of 64 from 67 Test matches; and 315 wickets at an average of 28.08 and economy rate of 4.44 in his 229-match ODI career. He is also India's leading wicket taker in World Cups with 44 across the 1992, 1996, 1999 and 2003 editions of the tournament.
Srinath was selected as a match referee by the International Cricket Council in 2006. On November 21, 2010, Anil Kumble and Srinath won the elections for president and secretary of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.
