It isn’t unusual for a person to get cold feet before wedding day, the D-day of one’s life where everything takes a U-turn. Because marriage means making a lifetime commitment; only when you approach the big day you will realise that the ‘I do’ carries a lot much weight than imagined.
Big changes can be emotionally overwhelming, alas, we humans aren’t immune to doubts, and celebrities too are no exception. Wedding nerves would be tenfold for people in showbiz all because of the amplified attention. For them, there is more to such event beyond those beautiful designer gowns or expensive champagne.
There are many celebrities who have had second thoughts before walking down the aisle — some of them after a brief period of courtship; some after staying engaged for years.
Last month, Telugu actor Akhil Akkineni, son of actor couple Nagarjuna and Amala, broke off his engagement with designer Shriya Bhupal. Their wedding was supposed to happen in Italy this May. If rumours are to be believed, Akhil, who is only 22, reportedly got cold feet before making such a big commitment.
Abhishek Bachchan was engaged to Karishma Kapoor in 2002, before he called it quits months later. Karishma married businessman Sanjay Kapoor the following year, while Abhishek married Aishwarya Rai later in 2007.
In Hollywood as well, there are many such break up stories that remain fresh in our memories. When Jennifer Lopez and her fiancé Ben Affleck called their relationship quits in 2004, it broke many hearts. A decade later, people still talk about the amazing chemistry those two shared.
While for commoners, there are several reasons to get married other than for love: some are yielding to the pressure from the society or family; some afraid to stay alone as they get older, and of course there are people who get married because they don’t know what else to do. However, it is assumed that celebrities are more fortunate when it comes to putting societal pressures behind personal choices, and yet, when it comes to relationships, it is never a smooth ride for anyone.
All of them for sure have started on a happy note, but that doesn’t mean things would stay rosy forever, and breaking off the engagement saves a lot of heartbreak than walking down the aisle with the wrong person and realising it much later.
