A group of youths allegedly molested a Class XI student at Barasat on Friday afternoon and assaulted her father and brother when they tried to rescue her.
The incident brought back memories of the fatal assault on Rajib Das, a Class X student who had tried to stop a group from molesting his elder sister at Barasat in February 2011.
The girl's father, in his late-50s, needed six stitches and has been admitted to Barasat District Hospital. His son was injured in his arms.
The girl was cycling towards her home at Sonatikra village along with her brother on her way back from tuition when they stopped at the railway crossing near Sondaliya railway station. Two youths on motorcycles started passing lewd remarks at the girl, who immediately protested. "The youths asked the girl to get off her bicycle. When she did not react, they pulled her off the cycle," said a resident who witnessed the incident.
"When the girl's brother rushed to her rescue, the youths picked on him and started beating him up," added the witness.
Four other youths reached the spot from the nearby railway station and joined the two in beating up the girl's brother. In desperation, the girl called her father, who reached the spot and was immediately beaten up. In his police complaint, the father said the youths hit him with a brick. Hearing his screams for help, about 20 residents rushed to his aid.
"Five from the gang managed to escape. But we could get hold of one. His name is Mohammad Jafruddin," said a resident.
"We have started a case of outrage of modesty. Besides Jafruddin, one more has been held," said Bhaskar Banerjee, additional superintendent of police, Barasat.
