Woman poses as CM's daughter-in-law

India, June 19 -- A 33-year-old management graduate was arrested by the Lajpat Nagar police station on Tuesday evening for allegedly attempting to cheat a high-profile jeweller by posing as the daughter-in-law of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The accused has been identified as Shikha Bhatia, an alleged habitual offender who was arrested earlier in 2010 by the Anand Vihar police station on the charges of cheating and forgery.

According to a senior police officer, the woman was arrested from Khanpur area, where she had arrived to collect a packet containing diamond jewellery items worth around R4 lakh.

Bhatia, posing as Mona Dikshit, daughter-in-law of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, had made a call to the office of the Lajpat Nagar market-based Jindal Jewellers.

She asked them to deliver some diamond jewellery items at Khanpur, as she was heading towards IGI Airport to board an international flight.

"She had made repeated calls at the jeweller's office and told them that her personal secretary would collect the parcel at Khanpur and the payment will be made by cheque. The frequent calls made the jeweller suspicious and he enquired about the demand for the jewellery at the office of the Chief Minister. The CM office confirmed that no such request was made by the daughter-in-law of the chief minister," said the senior officer.

After the confirmation, the jeweller approached the Lajpat Nagar police and a team under the supervision of Ramesh Kumar, SHO of the police station, was formed to arrest the cheat.

"A sub-inspector in the guise of an employee of the jeweller was sent to Khanpur with a packet containing jewellery items. He met the woman who claimed to be the personal secretary of Mona Dikshit and accepted the parcel. A cheque of R3.5 lakh of a government bank was handed over to the sub-inspector. It was issued in the name of Mona Dikshit," the officer added.

Since both the cheque and name of the account holder were fake, the woman was immediately taken into custody for interrogation. She was taken to the police station where she confessed to her crime after sustained grilling.

A case of cheating and forgery was registered against Bhatia and she was arrested, the officer added.
