Watson to return as bowler in IPL to resume all-rounder role ahead of Ashes

Sydney, Apr 5 (ANI): Australian vice-captain Shane Watson will make an early return as a bowler for the Rajasthan Royals team in the Indian Premier League so that he can resume his all-round role for Australia at the Champions Trophy in June, which, he hopes, will be a launching pad for the Ashes.

Watson had initially gained permission from his IPL franchise to miss the first couple of weeks of the tournament to be with his wife and newborn son although with his son's early arrival, he has decided to fly to India this weekend and should miss only two games, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Watson, who is expected to build up his bowling in the nets before making his medium-pacers available, admitted that he has a risk of being dropped unless he improved his batting, adding that he has a desire to bowl again.

Stating that he missed bowling, Watson said that it has been a plan over the last two or three months to get his body to a position where he can get back into bowling again, adding that coming to India as a specialist batsman has not been successful at all.

Although Watson's place in the Champions Trophy squad is not in doubt as he averages 42 in one-dayers, the decision to bowl in the IPL is sure to raise eyebrows among Watson's critics as he didn't bowl in the disastrous 4-0 Test series defeat in India, and performed poorly as a specialist batsman, the report added.
