Viagra 'may help fight obesity'

Washington, January 18 (ANI): The Potency converts unwanted white fat cells and could thus possibly be the annoying "love handles" just melt away, researchers say.

Presumably, Viagra also reduces the risk of complications of obesity.

Viagra converts fat cells to discover the University of Bonn researchers a pathway of sexual enhancer that could fight obesity.

The drug interferes with a signalling chain of the messenger cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which allows the inflow of blood and an erection.

Researchers were aware some time ago on another effect: Obese mice lose weight when they get over a longer period sildenafil. However, the cause was unclear. Brought light into the darkness now the University of Bonn.

"We have been interested for a long time, the effect of cGMP on the fat cells," Prof. Dr. Alexander Pfeifer said.

"Therefore, the sildenafil for us was a potentially attractive candidate," he said.

Viagra converts unwanted white to beige fat cells by testing the team around Prof. Pfeifer along with the Pharmaceutical Centre of the University of Bonn, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research the effect of sildenafil on fat cells in mice. The researchers administered the rodents for seven days this potency.

"The effects were quite amazing," Dr. Ana Kilic said.

Sildenafil turned increasingly to the animals, the white fat cells, which are also integrated into the "problem areas" of the man in beige fat cells. "Beige fat cells burn energy from food and convert them into heat," says Prof. Pfeifer. Because beige fat cells can melt easily and tackle obesity, they are the hope of the researchers. Favourable influence on inflammatory responses, the scientists also made another interesting observation.

White fat cells are more "fattening", they take significantly in size and can then distribute and messengers that cause inflammation and the health problems are.

From such inflammation may for example cardiovascular disease with heart attack and stroke than consequences, cancer and diabetes.

"This apparently caused sildenafil in mice that the fat cells can not easily get to this slippery slope," Pfeifer said.

The development of white cells seemed to be going a whole healthier. More than half a billion overweight people worldwide Worldwide, more than half a billion people are overweight.

Against this background, arising from the study interesting starting points for drug discovery "Sildenafil may reduce not only erection problems, but also affect the risks of obesity positive," says Prof. Pfeifer.

Scientists may have found a lever that can be converted into the desired unwanted white beige (brown-like) fat cells, can tumble the excess pounds. In addition, under certain circumstances could reduce the risk of complications of obesity.

The study has been published in The Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). (ANI)
