UPA Govt. keen on farmers' welfare: Chidambaram

Sivagnaga (Tamil Nadu), July 27 (ANI): Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Saturday said the UPA Government is keen on farmers' welfare and has come up with various pro - farmer steps.

Chidambaram, who inaugurated a branch of the Oriental Bank of Commerce at Milaganur near Sivagnaga in Tamil Nadu, said hiking the support price for various crops like paddy and cotton and offering low-interest loans are among the steps taken to help the farmers.

The Finance Minister said the procurement price for paddy which was 650 per quintal has been more than doubled to 1,350.

Chidambaram also said the foodgrain stock in the country had increased to 2.6 lakh crore tonnes.

He further said India was importing wheat once but now in a position to export. (ANI)
