'United' BJP will decide on PM candidate at appropriate time: Venkaiah Naidu

Bangalore, Aug. 3 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader M. Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday rubbished media reports of an infighting within the saffron fold with regard to the prime ministerial candidate for the next general elections, and said an announcement in this regard will be made at an appropriate time.

He also made it clear that the BJP is not waiting for the Congress Party to declare its prime ministerial candidate first.

Naidu said the BJP Parliamentary Board, which is the party's topmost decision-making body, will take a final call on this issue.

The Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) has asked the BJP to clear the decks for formally announcing Modi as its prime ministerial nominee. The RSS green signal came during detailed discussions between senior Sangh leaders and BJP leaders on Thursday.

The BJP leader also played safe on actor-turned politician Shatrughan Sinha's support for party stalwart Lal Krishna Advani as the contender for the top job, and said an individual might have said about his personal opinion.

"There is no need to worry about that. There is no infighting; there is no difference of opinion. The party is totally united. As and when required, the party will make an announcement about the Prime Minister candidate," he added.

The BJP MP from Patna Sahib, Shatrughan Sinha, has caused embarrassment to the party in recent days, and told on several occasions that Advani was best suited to be the party's prime ministerial candidate.

The outspoken BJP MP has also said that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi should not have been made the party's 2014 election committee chief.

Meanwhile, Naidu criticized the Congress for making all sorts of baseless allegations against Modi, and said the ruling party at the Centre has become afraid of the BJP's newly-appointed campaign committee chief for the upcoming polls.

Modi, who is awaiting an official nod from the BJP with regard to the contender for the country's topmost post, had earlier on Thursday outlined the importance of reaching out to all saffron sympathisers.

Modi stressed short time lines ahead of the Lok Sabha election and told the meeting about the importance of social media and all manner of interest groups that can be aligned with BJP and can be tapped for their unhappiness with the UPA Government at the Centre.

The discussions on Thursday focused on maximizing the gains of involving all Sangh organizations like VHP and Bajrang Dal that have sometimes been not just adrift but at loggerheads with BJP. The intent was to ensure a high degree of coordination and reduction of personality clashes within the saffron family. (ANI)
