Asia Cup: Pakistan v Sri Lanka 3rd ODI at Mirpur; 15th March 2012.

Sri Lanka 188; Pakistan 189/4 (Pakistan won by 6 wickets)

The scorecard of the match is here.

Umar Akmal and Misbah-ul-Haq ensured that the brilliant effort from the bowling trio of Cheema, Ajmal and Gul wasn’t wasted as Pakistan came back from a precarious position of 33-3 to register a 6-wicket win over Sri Lanka at Dhaka. The win also ascertains Pakistan a spot in the final of the Asia Cup.

Observations:

Aizaz Cheema was surprisingly declared as the player of the match (4 for 43 in 9 overs, IMPACT 4.05) although four other players were ahead of him on the Match IMPACT scale. Cheema’s bowling effort had the highest Bowling IMPACT in the match.

Umar Akmal (77 off 72, IMPACT 8.52*) was the highest Impact player of the match. He came in at a time when Pakistan were reeling at 33-3 and absorbed immense pressure for the team (highest Pressure IMPACT alongside Misbah-ul-Haq) as well as had the highest Strike Rate IMPACT amongst all the batsmen. He also had a Chasing IMPACT (alongwith Misbah) as he guided his team to a comprehensive finish at the end and registered the highest Batting IMPACT of 8.27*.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq was the second highest Impact player after Akmal (72 not out off 93, IMPACT 8.32*). Misbah’s innings followed the same characteristics as that of Akmal’s (Strike Rate and Pressure IMPACT) as Pakistan sealed the match with a bonus point.

His Chasing IMPACT however was the highest as he finished the chase unbeaten. It should be noted that he is Pakistan’s all-time second highest Impact ODI batsman on Chasing IMPACT (after Saeed Anwar) and also the world’s 17th best batsman at it. His Batting IMPACT in the match was 7.57*.

Sri Lanka’s Wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakarra (72 off 92, IMPACT 6.21*) and Upul Tharanga (72 off 92, IMPACT 4.96) were the highest impact players for Sri Lanka in this match. They came together when Sri Lanka were struggling at 66-4 and batted their team out of trouble as the absorbed pressure (Pressure IMPACT) during their 96-run partnership for the 5th wicket and registered a Batting IMPACT of 5.51* and 4.46 respectively. However their efforts went down the drain as none of the Sri Lankan batsmen other than Dilshan managed to register a Batting IMPACT of above 1.

After Cheema, Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul had the highest Bowling IMPACT in the match. Ajmal’s wicket of Tharanga (Partnership Breaking IMPACT) in particular was crucial as it ensured Sri Lanka couldn’t capitalise on the 96-run partnership between Tharanga and Sangakkara.

Suranga Lakmal was easily the highest impact bowler for Sri Lanka in the match. His wickets of Jamshed and Younis Khan upfront to reduce Sri Lanka to 33-3 had a Pressure Building IMPACT in the match.

Lasith Malinga and Shahid Afridi, two of ODI’s high Impact players, failed to have any Impact in the match.

Both the highest impact Batting and Bowling performances in the match came from Pakistan showcasing the amount of dominance they enjoyed over the Sri Lanka in the match. Overall, Pakistan’s Team IMPACT in the match was 2.35 as compared to Sri Lanka’s 1.49.
