Twitter admits failing women faced with rape threat abuse

Washington, July 31 (ANI): Microblogging site Twitter has reportedly admitted to allegations that it has failed women who faced rape threats through its platform.

According to the Sky News, Twitter has been accused of a poor abuse reporting tool in its site which has led to increased instances where users are faced with 'tweet abuse'.

Recently, a feminist activist Caroline Criado-Perez campaigning for a woman to replace Charles Darwin on the new 10 pound note was faced with tweet threats of rape and murder.

The site in its blog titled 'we hear you' claimed that it is aware of the way certain people misuse the platform for sending abusive tweets to other users and the site is in the process of exploring easier ways to report abuse.

Twitter's Head of Safety Del Harvey said that any time that someone feels the site wasn't responsive, or wasn't reactive or didn't care then, yes, it has failed in that instance and it needs to do better.

Harvey said that a 'report abuse' button, already available on its latest iPhone app, will be extended to other platforms and 'automated and manual systems' were already in place to prevent abuse and Twitter was now working on a further solution that will allow users to tap on a tweet and report it as abusive.

Criado-Perez said that Twitter needs to 'get a grip' on security as it was ill-equipped to handle episodes of sustained abuse and needed to work more closely with police to deal with internet trolls, the report added. (ANI)
