Toppers soak in their day in the sun

Ranchi, Feb. 2: A sense of pride, jubilation and homecoming was palpable among alumni and toppers who stole the limelight in the presence of family and friends during the 27th convocation of Ranchi University (RU) on its Morabadi campus today.

"I feel connected to my second home and I am looking forward to be a lecturer here," said Alia Parveen, a postgraduate in English who is pursuing PhD from the varsity.

Alia, the topper in MA (English) for the 2011 batch with a percentage of 66, was among 2,500 graduates, 1,000 postgraduates, 63 PhD holders, two DLitt, one DSc and 38 gold medallists (23 girls and 15 boys) who relived their memorable moments at the varsity.

The toppers, who received gold medals from chief guest and Union HRD minister M.M. Pallam Raju, were occupying the first three rows of the convocation pavilion adorned with marigold and spread over 40,000 sqft and packing an audience of 5,000.

For many, who are either pursuing higher studies or trying to find their feet in the professional arena, the reunion after two years was a moment to cherish.

Shruti Priya, a postgraduate in economics who secured 69.5 per cent and is pursuing PhD at the varsity, was elated yet calm after receiving the gold medal from Pallam Raju.

"It was a dream, as we got an opportunity to meet a notable academic and also get words of praise," she added, referring to the minister.

Mussarat Naaz, a gold medallist who secured 77.31 per cent in zoology (PG), was a tad disappointed as her parents were unable to attend the convocation due to unavailability of passes. "I wish my parents were present here," said Mussarat, who is also pursuing PhD from the university.

Arunima Sengupta, a postgraduate topper in psychology who has been involved in research at RU, quipped, "This special moment will always remain close to my heart."

Trilochan Singh, a commerce graduate and gold medallist who is vying for a coveted job in banking, was quick to add, "Wearing the convocation gown and cap for this day is a great feeling in itself."

He secured 78 per cent in commerce (2008-2011).

Vibhuti Bhushan Roy, a PhD degree holder, added, "Isse achcha kya mauka ho sakta hain? (Can there be a better occasion?) My entire family is feeling proud."
