Three found guilty of 'enslaving', sexually abusing Indian woman in London

London, Apr 20 (ANI): Three London residents have been found guilty of physically and sexually abusing an Indian woman employed in their households as a nanny and a domestic worker, and also for treating her like a 'slave'.

Shamina Yousuf and Shashi Obhrai were found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and making a threat to kill, while Enkarta Balapovi was convicted for raping the mother of four, who belongs to the Indian city of Hyderabad, the BBC reports.

According to the jury hearing, the woman's passport was taken from her after she reached UK and she was made to work up to 16 hours a day for 365 days a year.

According to the police, the woman was forced to sleep on the kitchen floor and only given scraps of food to eat and was treated as a 'sexual toy or general dogsbody'.

Police further said that the victim, who is now in a wheelchair following her years of abuse, was burned with an iron by Obhrai, who also threatened her with insulin needles, hit her head with a rolling pin and beat her on the back with high heeled shoes.

Following the verdict, the victim stated that her tormentors should be punished for their crimes, adding that they have ruined her life and kept her away from her children.

The report also said that the woman, who was paid only 2,300 pounds between 2003 and 2006, is still in England and is recovering under the care of a charity called Kalayaan, which specialises in help for migrant domestic workers.

Balapovi, Yousuf and Obhrai will be sentenced on 16 May, the report added. (ANI)
