Tension grips along Assam-Nagaland border following farmer's killing

Jorhat (Assam), June 4 (ANI): Tension prevails along the Assam-Nagaland border after armed miscreants killed a farmer during a firing incident

A farmer was killed and several persons injured at Naginijaan area near Mariani in the district along the Assam-Nagaland border.

The deceased farmer, Sanjay Bhumij, was a tea estate labourer and was working in a field close to the inter-state border when a bullet hit him.The police and paramilitary force personnel reached the spot and exchanged fire with the armed miscreants for about one hour.A resident, Surya Das said that Bhumij died on his way to the hospital.

"We are just helpless as today they shot him dead and tomorrow they might kill us. He was working in the field and some miscreants suddenly started firing. He was hit by a bullet in his arm. He died on the way to hospital," said Das.

For the past two weeks, the situation along the Assam-Nagaland boundary under Mariani police station has been tense, following the kidnapping of two labourers from Naginijan tea estate from Nagaland in May.

The border near Jorhat and Mokokchung has been on the boil for the past two decades. Both the States have been periodically accusing each other of violating the agreement.

While Assam claims that its neighbour has encroached upon its land, Nagaland accuses Assam of setting up police outposts in several "disputed areas." (ANI)
