Telegraph Chess from tomorrow

Calcutta: Diptayan Ghosh is the top seed in the 24th The Te-legraph Schools' Chess Championship, organised by Alekh-ine Chess Club. The tournament will be held at Gorky Sadan, from January 24 to 31.

This will be the last time that Diptayan will be particip-ating in the tournament since from the 25th edition he will not be eligible for school-level events. On the prize-distributi-on day itself, the 14-year-old will leave for Delhi from where he will be flying to Moscow to play in a tournament.

GMs Surya Sekhar Ganguly and Deep Sengupta will be present during the inauguration ceremony.

The 10-round event, which has produced the likes of Sur-ya Sekhar Ganguly, Sandipan Chanda and Mary Ann Gom-es, has attracted over 400 participants this time, including players from Nepal and Bang-ladesh. The tournament will also see the participation of the son of Ziaur Rahman, Ba-ngladesh's first Grandmaster.

The overall prize money of the event is Rs 1.2 lakh, with the winner taking away Rs 21,000.
