Telangana agitation: Vizianagaram curfew relaxed for 12 hours

Vizianagaram, Oct. 12 (ANI): After no untoward incident was reported during the nine-hour relaxation of the curfew here on Friday, state officials lifted it for 12 hours on Saturday, as life slowly returns to normal following the recent anti-Telangana protests.

"As law and order situation has improved substantially and no untoward incident has been reported so far, the district administration has proposed to relax the curfew tomorrow that is on 12th October from 6 am to 6 pm (local time)," District Magistrate, Kantilal Dande said on October 11.

However, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure will continue during the period.

On Friday, the curfew here was relaxed here from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to facilitate residents to purchase essential commodities.

On October 5, curfew was clamped down on the city consequent to large-scale violence from protesters objecting to the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

Anti-Telangana protests have penetrated throughout the country, and triggered indefinite fasts from political leaders.

YSR Congress President Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, who was admitted to Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), on October 9 after being forcibly evicted from the site of his hunger strike to protest against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, was reportedly discharged earlier today.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, who was on a fast for five days in the national capital against the Centre's decision to create a separate state of Telangana, was moved to the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital from Andhra Bhavan on Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the reconstituted Group of Ministers (GoM) looking into the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh held its first meeting in New Delhi on Friday to expedite the process of creation of a separate state of Telangana.

The GoM, which was chaired by Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, held discussions to assure people of Andhra Pradesh that their concerns would be addressed with fairness and objectivity.

After the meeting, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad confirmed that the full-fledged meeting would be held on October 19.

On October 3, the Union Cabinet had decided to go ahead with the process for the creation of a separate Telangana state carved out from Andhra Pradesh. (ANI)
