Surprise move by Fifa

Geneva: Fifa surprisingly opted for GoalControl on Tuesday as their goalline technology system to be used at next year's World Cup in Brazil, picking the little-known German project ahead of more established rivals like Hawk-Eye.

GoalControl-4D uses 14 high-speed cameras placed strategically around a stadium to track a ball's position, in a similar manner to the Hawk-Eye system which was predicted to win after establishing its reputation for accuracy and added entertainment value in top-level tennis and cricket.

While Hawk-Eye was at the forefront for several years during efforts to break down Fifa president Sepp Blatter's initially stubborn resistance to high-tech help for referees, the GoalControl company was formed last year and was licensed by football's world governing body only one month ago.

London: Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe will miss up to three matches with a muscle injury, his manager Andre Villas-Boas said on Wednesday.

The England forward will sit out Thursday's Europa League quarter-final first leg at home to Basel and Sunday's Premier League clash with Everton and could also miss the return match with the Swiss side next week.

"Jermain has a muscle injury which is probably going to take him out of the next two games definitely and maybe Basel away," Villas-Boas told reporters.

Vasco: Salgaocar will look to capitalise on their goalless draw against title aspirant Churchill Brothers, when they lock horns with Prayag United FC in their I-League match at the Tilak Stadium, on Thursday.

With the I-League matches being shifted from Duler Stadium to Tilak Stadium due to renovation work, Salgaocar will be happy to play in their home town and will be looking to script a win against the Calcutta side.

"We are doing pretty well now. We have a very good chance of winning this match. But that doesn't mean we are taking Salgaocar lightly," United SC coach Eelco Schattori said.
