Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) kept their home record intact in the ongoing season of Indian Premier League (IPL) when they beat Delhi Daredevils (DD) by 15 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Batting first, Sunrisers put 191 runs for the loss of 4 wickets on the board, with comeback-man Kane Williamson and Shikhar Dhawan hitting fifties. In reply, Daredevils fell short of the target by 15 runs, finishing on 176 for 5 from their 20 overs. The SRH bowlers bowled well as a unit, with Mohammed Siraj shining on his debut. Let us take a look at his sparkling debut and other highlights from the game here: FULL CRICKET SCORECARD, Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Delhi Daredevils – Match 21
Williamson’s comeback: The New Zealand captain is a terrific team-man. After being made to sit on the bench for first 5 games, he did not shy away from even serving drinks to his teammates. And when his chance came, he hammered a match-winning 51-ball 89; showing almost as if he had been there all this while. He, quite rightly, was named Man of the Match.
The Dhawan–Williamson stand: Williamson’s knock also gave Dhawan the much-needed confidence. The former batted with a lot of composure, taking pressure off Dhawan and giving him space to settle down. They complemented each other and got to their respective fifties, adding 136 for the second wicket. It was their stand which paved way for a big total and proved decisive in the end.
Siraj’s debut: The son of an auto-rickshaw driver, Siraj made his First-Class debut last year, playing twice for Hyderabad. However, it was in Ranji Trophy 2016-17 that he left his impression, finishing with 41 wickets from 9 games. He was the third-highest wicket-taker this season, which fetched him a whopping 2.6 crores-contract with SRH. He finally made his debut on Wednesday and picked up wicket of Sam Billings in his first over. He later came to dismiss Sanju Samson, his second wicket of the day and one of many more to come.
Chris Morris — the lone ranger: ‘Tipo’ Morris has been an extremely valuable asset for DD. He gives it a tonk when bats, and makes things happen when he bowls. He finished with 4 for 26 today — being the only one from his side to take wickets. Unfortunately, he kept cooling his heels in the dugout as Angelo Mathews and Shreyas Iyer were surprisingly promoted above him. Morris, whose big hits could have made a difference, waited for his turn, which never arrived. DD lost by 15 runs.
Samson’s golden run: Samson continued with his purple patch, scoring a vital 42 at the top of the order. He has now scored 215 runs from 5 games at 43, and is 4th in the list of highest run-scorers in IPL 10. The cricket fraternity is optimistic that this season would become a watershed one for him and he finally lives up to his true potential.
The pie-chucker strikes! It is never easy to keep Yuvraj Singh out of action. While he failed with bat, scoring just 3, Yuvraj made a mark with the ball. ‘The pie-chucker’ bowled just one over, but effected a crucial run out of Karun Nair before getting the big fish Rishabh Pant for a golden duck.
Bowling aces go wicketless: SRH’s bowling aces — Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rashid Khan — went wicketless on Wednesday. It was astonishing, for while Bhuvneshwar owns the Purple Cap with 15 wickets in IPL 2017, Rashid is at third spot with 9. SRH managed to win despite two of its best guns firing tonight, showing just how good their bowling department is.
