Suicide bid spurs rapist arrest in Bokaro

Bokaro, Jan. 16: Bokaro police arrested a 22-year-old computer engineering student last night from his Sector IV-E home for allegedly raping a young mother on Sunday who attempted suicide out of shame.

The young woman's sense of acute humiliation, added to the fact that both the rapist and her husband asked her to keep quiet, prompted her to drink phenyl on Monday. But her suicide bid changed her husband's attitude to rape, from telling his wife to hush it up as a shameful secret to treating it as a crime.

As she fought for her life at a nursing home, he filed an FIR against the rapist.

Third-year engineering student Manoj Kumar was sent to Chas jail on Wednesday after superintendent of police Kuldeep Dwivedi grilled him. Manoj, who studied at Bokaro's Guru Govind Singh Engineering College, had raped the 25-year-old married woman, his sister's friend, near Mohan Kumar Mangalam Stadium on Sunday.

The woman's husband, a petty businessman, had found them in a dark corner near the stadium when she had already been raped. The youth, who had trussed up the woman's hands and gagged her, was slapping her after the sexual assault when the husband saw them. As the husband rushed to separate them, the youth overpowered him and fled.

The husband pleaded with the woman to keep quiet about the rape for the sake of family honour and their child. The next day, the woman, after telling her husband that she could not endure a life of humiliation, consumed phenyl .

She was rushed to Neelam Nursing Home in Chas in a critical condition but is stable now.

According to the FIR filed with the Sector IV police station, the victim, who lived with her husband in Chas, knew the rapist and was friends with his sister as her parents and his family lived in Sector IV-E, Bokaro Steel City.

Manoj, the son of a Bokaro Steel Limited officer, met the victim at City Center, a popular market in Bokaro, on Sunday evening where she had gone to get her cellphone repaired. Ironically, the youth had offered the homemaker to walk 300m with her for her "safety" till the main road and put her in an auto.

Sector IV officer-in-charge S.P. Singh said Manoj had been booked under IPC 376 on charges of rape.

Coal belt DIG Laxman Singh told The Telegraph the police had been asked to submit a chargesheet as early as possible for the engineering student's speedy trial.
