Student's molester nabbed in Metro

A woman in her early 20s travelling in Metro with her brother was harassed by a youth around 9.30pm on Sunday. A passenger in the compartment promptly alerted the local police station, leading to the arrest of the accused at the next station.

The woman, a master's student at Rabindra Bharati University, was returning from Kalighat to her Netajinagar home.

"The youth, who was standing close to the victim, molested her soon after she boarded the train. When she protested, one of her co-passengers called up Charu Market police station," said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, joint commissioner of police (crime).

As instructed by the police over the phone, the student got off the train at the next station, Rabindra Sarobar, along with the accused, identified as Partho Das.

By then, the police had alerted the authorities at Rabindra Sarobar station. "As soon as the woman hauled the accused off the train, he was arrested by Metro Railway police. He was later handed over to cops at Charu Market police station," said a police officer.

Das, a resident of Bansdroni, is an unemployed graduate. He was allegedly drunk at the time of the incident. The youth was booked for outrage of modesty after the woman lodged a written complaint against him.

Last month, a man had harassed a woman aboard a train, in MG Road station and even outside it. The victim's husband, who was waiting outside the station, helped her catch the alleged tormentor.

A surge in complaints of harassment by women had prompted the Metro authorities to deploy a special task force, including women officers in plainclothes. According to an official, 48 men were booked for molestation on Metro premises in a week after the force became operational.

"The number of cases has gone down after the first week because people have come to know about the force," said a senior Metro official.
