Persistent rain had the last word as the first game in the five-match series was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

The first one-day international between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Pallekele today was called off without a ball being bowled because of persistent showers. The showers didn't allow even the toss to take place.

This latest washout comes after the only Twenty20 International between the teams on Tuesday was ruined by bad weather at the same venue. Only 16 overs were possible in that match before it was called off.

The second match in the five-game series will be played at Colombo's Premadasa Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will also play two Tests after the one-day series.
