Snowscape may spring a surprise

Stage is set for the running of the richest and the most glamourous event in the country's racing calendar, the 2,400m McDowell Signature Premier Indian Derby, on Sunday. There are 17 horses in the line-up but on the speed and stamina factor, which helps winning the Derby, may rule out a dozen of them eyeing for the record winner's purse of Rs 1.8 crore. Those needing consideration are the likes of An Acquired Taste, the Ruia Cup winner, Machiavellianism, an easy winner of the Indian 2,000 Guineas, New World, an impressive fourth to An Acquired Taste, Snowscape, the runaway winner of the Eveready Calcutta Derby Stakes, and finally, Wind Stream, the Derby favourite following his easy victory in the Bangalore 2000 Guineas. Among the five named, only Snowscape boasts of already winning a 2,400m Derby. The China Visit son was the top-rated colt in his first season and there is every reason to believe that the Vijay Singh-trained horse, ridden by Christopher Alford, may take all by a surprise.SELECTIONS
