Gujarat Lions (GL) thrashed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 7 wickets in match 31 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Andrew Tye was adjudged Man of the Match for his stunning 3 for 12. Tye is now the second-highest wicket-taker of this season, while Suresh Raina jumped to the top spot in the runs section, securing the Orange Cap. With this win, the Lions move to No. 6 in points table and the Royal Challengers stutter to the penultimate position, just above Delhi Daredevils. However, it was Aaron Finch who took RCB to the cleaners, registering the fastest half-century for the Lions. This and other top moments in today’s highlights. Full Cricket Scorecard: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) vs Gujarat Lions (GL) IPL 2017, Match 31 at Bengaluru
Shastri misfires tracer bullet: While announcing the award for the best catch, Ravi Shastri had a tough time getting Ishan Kishan’s name right. He said Ishan ‘Kitchen’ instead. Perhaps the gruelling IPL schedule had left him hungry; or perhaps it was an honest mistake. We better not judge him.
Raina regains Orange Cap: Though Raina is the highest run-scorer in the history of IPL, he has never finished won the Orange Cap. With half the tournament done and dusted, Raina has moved to the top of the table surpassing Gautam Gambhir. However, given the Lions wear an orange-coloured cap already, winning a cap of a similar colour won’t affect their uniform.
RCB feel the Finch: Raina’s presence was never felt with Finch going bonkers. He hit 5 fours and 6 sixes, with one of them hitting the roof. He scored 72 off 34.
Andrew ties a 3-for: Tye picked up 2 wickets off his first 2 balls. He was on a hat-trick for the second time in this edition. However, he agreed in the presentation that the third ball was not as effective as the other wicket-taking deliveries.
Sir Jadeja finds lost mojo: Before tonight’s contest, Ravindra Jadeja had the worst average and economy for a bowler who bowled at least 50 deliveries in this edition of IPL. Nonetheless, he was spot on with his line and length today, finishing with figures of 2 for 28.
The Big Three fail: Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, and AB de Villiers could manage only 23 runs between them.
RCB’s bowling misery: The RCB bowlers were reduced to rubble against the might of the Lion’s batting. Five of their six bowlers gave away over 9 runs an over.
