Rebel held

Ranchi, Jan. 9: Police today arrested CPI (Maoist) secretary of Koyal Sankh zone Nanu Ram alias Prabhatji (47) from Kanke police station area.

Active for the last 21 years, the rebel is accused of killing several policemen and setting government vehicles on fire. He carried a reward of Rs 7 lakh on his head and is believed to have played a role during the recent encounter in Latehar that left many CRPF jawans dead. A pistol with five rounds of ammunition was recovered from him.

Senior superintendent of police Saket Kumar Singh said Ram was also a member of the rebel outfit's Bihar Regional Committee. He is believed to be the one who works out strategies to attack the police.

Asked how Ram was arrested, he said the Maoist leader was arrested when reached the city to meet his wife, who lives in the city as the couple's two sons study in a well-known public school here.

So far Ram has admitted his involvement in as many as 12 cases. He had been arrested twice before, in 1992 and 2000.
