An assistant sub-inspector of Hare Street police station has been arrested for allegedly raping a mentally disabled woman who lives next door to his rented house in Beniapukur.
Residents of the locality allegedly caught 45-year-old Prakash Thapa red-handed after she entered the woman's house on Karaya Road around 4pm on Wednesday.
"We forced her way into the woman's house after hearing her screams and saw the officer was raping her," said a neighbour.
The residents dragged out Thapa, who was allegedly drunk, and kept assaulting him till a team from the local Beniapukur police station reached the spot and rescued the assistant sub-inspector.
Some neighbours said Thapa would often tease girls of the locality. Police sources, however, said there was no complaint against him.
Sources said the alleged victim, who is unmarried and lives with her father, was alone in the house and eating lunch when Thapa attacked her. She was taken to hospital for a medical test. Her father has lodged a complaint with Beniapukur police station. The woman's statement was recorded late on Wednesday.
"The accused policeman has been arrested on the basis of a complaint of rape lodged by the victim's father. I cannot say anything else now as the matter is being probed," said Satyajit Banerjee, deputy commissioner of police, eastern suburban division.
The parents of a 14-year-old lodged a complaint of attempted rape and criminal intimidation against four men in Jadavpur on Tuesday night.
According to the complaint, the rape had occurred on the premises of KS Roy TB Hospital in Jadavpur on November 25. No one has yet been arrested.
