Rajasthan minister Babu Lal Nagar accused of rape, resigns

The minister threatened the woman saying that if she complained, he will have her killed like Bhanwari Devi.

JAIPUR: Babu Lal Nagar, Rajasthan Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies, who has been accused of raping of 27-year-old woman, resigned from the Gehlot Cabinet today.

Nagar who submitted his resignation to Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot was quoted by NDTV saying: 'Nobody asked me to resign. I have done nothing wrong.'

The police has been accused of delaying actions against the minister, finally sprung into action after two days after the case was registered.

The woman said that she had been receiving threats from the minister's aides to take back the case.

Speaking to NDTV, the woman said: 'They threatened to kill me, kidnap my son. I have been hiding, running from one place to another.'

A first information report (FIR) was registered against Minister of State for Dairy and Rural Industries Babu Lal Nagar under sections 376 (rape) and 323 (causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code at Sodala police station here Tuesday, police inspector Bhawani Singh told IANS.

The woman says that the minister has helped her in the past, so she unsuspectingly went to his house when the minister promised her a job.

She told the police that the minister took her to his bedroom and raped her.

Then Babu Lal Nagar threatened her by saying that if she complained, he will have her killed like Bhanwari Devi. 

Nagar represents Dudu assembly constituency in Ajmer district.

"The complainant is a married woman. She had approached a court recently accusing the minister of raping her at his government residence in Civil Lines area Sep 11," Singh said.

The officer added that the court asked police to register the FIR Monday.

"We received the court orders today (Tuesday). The FIR will be forwarded to the CID for further investigation," said the officer.
