Calcutta: B.R. Raja defeated top seed Ankur Chadha to cause the biggest upset in the match play format of the 112th Tata Steel Amateur Golf Championship at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club on Thursday.
Ankur had won the individual category on Wednesday and was high on confidence. But Raja displayed some brilliant skills to get the better of Ankur. In the end, the Bangalorean defeated Ankur by 1 UP.
After two days of competitive stroke play, 32 players took to the greens for the match play format on Thursday.
The day also saw some other close encounters, where Pratap Atwal edged past Sunit Chowrasia by 1 UP. Local lad Viraj Madappa defeated Shakti Singh 6 and 5.
Udayan Mane and Gagan Verma, who helped India B to the international team title, also registered victories. While Mane beat against Dhruv Sheoran 1 UP, Gagan Verma eased past Jasjeet Singh 4 and 3.
The longest match of the day was between Vikram Rana and Manpreet Mann. In the end, Mann prevailed in the tie, which finished on the 21st hole.
