Calcutta: Zeeshan Ali feels it will be unfair to ask Leander Paes to play in the singles as well as the doubles rubber in the Davis Cup tie against South Korea.
"I don't think Leander will be available to play in singles. He hasn't played singles in a while. So it would be unfair to ask him to play in singles. Even if he plays in both the singles and the doubles, it will be get very tedious for him because he will then be playing on all three days.
"I think we will pair Leander Paes with Purav Raja for the doubles. Vijayant Malik and VM Ranjith will be playing the singles. We will be having our first team meeting on January 26 and we will formulate our strategt," Zeeshan, who arrived in the city on Saturday, said .
Asked whether Zeeshan would have preferred to have the trio (Mahesh Bhupathi, Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Dev Varman) in the India squad, he said: "It would definitely have been very nice to play the rubber with a full team, including Mahesh, Rohan, Somdev.
"To be frank, this is exactly not the circumstance, under which I would have liked to become the coach. But then, I'm not the one who is deciding… My main job is to get the best out of the players who are available.
"At this point in time, we are very lucky to have Leander on our side. The amount of experience, which Leander has, will help the younger players in the team."
