Need punishment harsher than death, says Park Street rape victim

Kolkata, June 24 (IANS) Saying that the death penalty was "not the answer", the Park Street gang-rape victim Monday demanded "stricter punishment" for the murderers of the second-year college student who was raped and killed by a group of youths June 7 at Barasat's Kamduni village.

"I am hoping for justice. Justice should be very strong, something stricter. Hanging is not the answer as the perpetrators cannot feel the pain inflicted by them on the victim. The punishment should be before society so that people can see," the Park Street rape victim told a TV channel Monday.

In an empathetic gesture, the victim of the Park Street gang-rape (a resident of Kolkata) Monday visited the family of the college student who was abducted, raped and killed when she was returning home after appearing in an examination.

Reaching out to the girl's kin, she expressed solidarity and support to the family members at Kamduni.

"Such a brutal incident has occurred in their family. Have faith. We are fighting for justice. They are not alone, we are with them," she said.

During her visit to the family recently, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had assured fast-tracking of the trial and ensuring capital punishment for the guilty.

The Park Street gang-rape victim is an Anglo-Indian woman. She was allegedly sexually assaulted at gunpoint in a moving car in the early hours Feb 6, 2012, by five men.

Three of the accused have been arrested while two are untraced and on the run.
