Process to reclaim the No. 1 spot is on: Dhoni

He said the upcoming series against England will be an interesting one.

Mumbai: They lost the No. 1 ranking in England last year, but India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has assured that the “process is on” to reclaim the spot in the longer version of the game.

“That plan is always on. Whatever format you play in the sport, you always want to be No 1. It’s a slow constant process that we are subjected to,” Dhoni told mediapersons during a promotional here Wednesday.

He said the upcoming series against England will be an interesting one.

“It will be an interesting one. If you see England, they are a very good side but what is important is to focus on our strengths and our weaknesses. We also need to improve over a period of time,” Dhoni observed.

Dhoni said that the short camp in Mumbai before the series would help them get into groove.

“We are reporting in a couple of days. We have a few practice matches before we get down to business,” Dhoni said.

All the top Indian players geared up for the series by playing the Ranji Trophy for their respective states.

Virender Sehwag, whose form has been under the scanner, scored a hundred in the second innings against UP. He said he was happy to have scored the century and hoped to bat well in the series against England.

On a different note, Dhoni revealed that being a professional cricketer was never on his agenda and would have rather been happy serving the country in the Army.

“Coming from a small town, I never thought that cricket would be my profession. I wanted to join the Indian Army. It was my dream. But then cricket happened. Everything fell into place, I started performing well in first-class cricket, Duleep Trophy and all the other tournaments.”

Meanwhile, Dhoni’s Superbike Championship Team changed its name from MSD R-N Racing Team India to Mahi Racing Team India and signed two new members.

“We plan to open a riding school. And hopefully one day, we can see an Indian driver on our bikes,” Dhoni said.

The renamed team signed up world champion Kenan Sofouglu and former world champion Fabien Foret, at a glittering event here.

Sofouglu is a Turkish driver having won the championship three times in 2007, 2010 and the recently-concluded season with the Kawaski team after the Portuguese Grand Prix. He also raced in the World Superbike Championship for Ten Kate, but with little success.

Foret, the French driver, is a 2002 world champion. At the end of 2008, he had 24 podium finishes, including 11 wins and 12 pole positions.

MSD R-N Racing Team India had made its debut in the 600cc class as India’s first FIM World Superbike Championship Team.

Despite its entry, mid-way into the season, the team put up a strong performance, peaking at the final race at Magny Cours, France with its rider Dan Linfoot pulling off a podium finish.

The Superbike championship will make its India debut in March next year, at the Buddh International Circuit.

With the new riders, the team is aiming for the championship, when they participate in their first full season at the 2013 World Superbike Championship.
