Guwahati, Dec. 30: Assam wound up their Vijay Merchant Trophy (under-16) East Zone cricket tournament at the bottom of the tally with only six points after their drawn match against hosts Bengal at Kalyani in Bengal yesterday.
Bowling out Assam for 151 in the first innings, Bengal declared their first innings at 297 for five.
The Assam boys stole a point from the match by managing to negotiate the opponent bowling attack for the last day to be reduced to 171 for seven in 77 overs in the second innings at close yesterday.
Opener Urooj Rizvi (72) played a patient knock while middle order bat Bikash Terang remained unbeaten on 25 in the second innings. K. Seth of Bengal accounted for three wickets conceding 34 runs and S. Tamang chipped in with two for 42.
It was a dismal season for the side which managed to clinch three points by virtue of first innings lead only against Odisha and conceded the first innings lead to Tripura and Jharkhand in home matches at Nagaon and Golaghat respectively. Bengal and Jharkhand topped the tally with 10 points each to qualify for the knockouts.
Veteran's badminton: The Assam Badminton Association will organise the veteran all-Assam inter-district open badminton championship at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium here from January 4 to 6.
