Poor British youth more drunk than the rich

London, Jan 1 (IANS) Poor youngsters in Britain are more likely to get drunk and end up in hospital than their rich counterparts, official figures have revealed.

A total of 1,784 drunk youths from the country's most deprived areas ended up in hospital in 2012, compared to 710 from posh areas, The Sun reported.

The official statistics were uncovered by the Labour party.

Last year, hospitals dealt with 11,304 cases of alcohol abuse involving people under 18.

Provisional figures for April to July last year show that among 3,470 youths needing treatment, 532 were from the poorest areas compared to 232 from the richest.

Officials are now looking at imposing higher duty on alcohol most closely linked to binge drinking.
