UEFA President and former football great Michel Platini has asked FIFA to extend the number of countries at the World Cup to 40.
The Frenchman’s suggestion comes on the back of Sepp Blatter’s comments last week that more countries from Asia and Africa should be playing at the World Cup.
The chief of European football feels that the best way to increase participants from those two continents is by increasing the total number of nations at the tournament, rather than taking away sports from European countries.
Platini said: “I totally agree with Mr Blatter that we need more African and Asian (teams). But instead of taking away some European, we have to go to 40 teams.”
The 58-year-old wants FIFA to implement his idea for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
“We can add two African, two Asiatic, two American, one Oceania and one from Europe,” he added.
