Philippines ship collision: Toll rises to 64

Manila, Aug 20 (IANS) The death toll in the collision of two ships last Friday in the Philippines rose to 64 Tuesday. At least 56 people are still missing, the Philippines Coast Guard said.

The number of rescued passengers stood at 750, Xinhua cited the coast guard as saying.

Passenger ship MV St. Thomas Aquinas collided with a cargo ship MV Sulpicio Express 7 off Talisay city in Cebu province last week. The passenger ship, carrying 870 people on board, sank immediately after the collision.

Due to an oil spill from the passenger ship, Cebu province declared a state of calamity Monday.
