Patriotic flavours in contest

The Tricolour, Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March, the peacock and the tiger ' the symbols of India's pride found canvases at Indus Fashion Academy (IFA), Ranchi, on Friday during a daylong face, hand and T-shirt painting competition that had been organised on the institute premises. The school of fine arts and design is located near Ranchi Women's College.

The competition, organised a day before the world's largest democracy celebrated its 64th Republic Day, saw participation from a handsome crowd of institute students, more than 49 of who took to the canvas to depict myriad thoughts on the theme "Tricolour".

If the thoughts were many, so were the reasons, with each participant offering his or her creation as a tribute to patriotism.

Sapna Bharti who painted a tiger said the idea behind her work was to show that her country was brave.

"The tiger symbolises courage. It is the representation of the wildlife of our country. My idea was to depict a majestic beast not scared by external powers," Bharti, who walked away with the first prize in the hand painting competition, told The Telegraph.

She added that her other reason for drawing a tiger was to spread awareness. "It is important that people get to know about them. We should save the tigers as their population is dwindling at an alarming rate," she said.

Bharti's classmate Ankit Kumar, who painted the Tricolour, the country's national flower lotus and Gandhiji's famous Dandi March on Army Public School sixth grader Arya Shekhar's face, said his idea was to symbolise the country's strength and pride.

"It is a small effort on my part to depict our heritage and our great leaders and our strengths. I tried to inculcate all the three aspects in my painting," Kumar, the first prize winner of the face painting competition, said.

Rahul Toppo, a Plus Two student of DAV Public School, Bariatu, who bagged the first prize in the T-shirt painting competition, added that the competition helped bring forth the latent talent of students.

"It was our way of showing that we loved and cared for our country. We will go to any extent to protect its integrity. Events such as these helps in stimulating young minds," Toppo said.

His work of Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March in the backdrop of the Tricolour was adjudged the best in the T-shirt painting competition.

Director of IFA Sabir Hussain0 said it was their responsibility to spread awareness among the younger generation so that they actively take part in the process of nation building.

"Hence, we must use occasions such as Republic Day to create a sense of moral responsibility among youngsters," he said.
