Set a daunting target, Mohammed’s blistering unbeaten 91 off just 58 deliveries, aided by an explosive cameo from Ashley Nurse (34 off 15 balls), saw the home side successfully chase a target in excess of 300 or more. It was the first time for the hosts to chase down such a score, following 31 previous failed attempts over a 44-year long period. Mohammed Hafeez led the tourists’ batting effort scoring an impressive 88. Opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad benefited from an early slice of luck to get to 67 and Shoaib Malik piled up 53 off 38 deliveries. They led Pakistan to a daunting score and also equalled their second-highest total against the opponents in the 50-over format. Nonetheless, the pacers were not upto the task and gave away the match.
Riding on an entertaining cameo from Evin Lewis, a patient knock by Powell in the middle order and late blitz from Nurse and Mohammad sealed the deal for the hosts. Pakistan would be eager to learn from their mistakes and level the series in the next tie. Their batsmen did the job, and they will hope for the same from their bowling line-up.
