Broom sweeps Scorchers under the carpet

CLT20: Otago Volts keep spotless record intact with 62-run win.

JAIPUR:
Opener Neil Broom slayed Perth Scorchers with a blood-curdling hundred as Otago Volts preserved their perfect record in the ongoing CLT20 with a 62-run win on Wednesday. At the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, in the most one-sided of matches, Volts needed just one innings to decide what could  be termed a contest only in name.

Propelled by Broom’s 56-ball 117, his maiden T20 century, and Ryan ten Doeschate’s 26-ball 66, Volts posted a mammoth 242/4 after Scorchers sent them to bat. There was only one logical outcome after a bombardment of 16 sixes and 19 fours and when Scorchers devolved to 11/3 in the second over of what would have been the biggest successful chase in all T20 cricket, the die was cast.

For the record, Scorchers managed 180/6 in their 20, Hilton Cartright top-scoring with an unbeaten 69, but there is little merit to discussing how they fared with the bat – or how Volts fared with the ball – for it was all about the havoc wreaked in the first innings.

This was Otago's 14th successive victory in the format.

Two down

At 9/2 in the third over, with opener Hamish Rutherford and the dangerous Brendon McCullum back in the hut, Otago seemed set for a struggle. The next 17 overs rubbished that assumption totally

Broom added 67 in 7.3 overs with wicketkeeper-batsman Derek de Brooder (48) before the latter was bowled by Adam Voges’ left-arm spin. Seventy-six for three in 10 overs and there still seemed some hope for Scorchers to restore parity, hope that was pulverized by the Broom-ten Doeschate combine.

Unbelievable

The pair blasted 128 in just 8 overs: a run rate of 16, which pretty much rules out picking individual gems from the galaxy of hits that lit up the skies. Ten Doeschate’s fifty took just 21 deliveries and by the time he was out, in the 18th over with the team score on 204, he had six towering sixes and three fours to his name.

Broom at the other end brought up his hundred in 51 balls and smashed eight sixes and nine boundaries in all. Save for left-arm spinner Michael Beer, every single Scorchers’ bowler went for in excess of ten runs-per over. There was nothing that that skipper Simon Katich could do to arrest this torrent of runs, and his day only got worse when he was run out without facing a ball during the ill-fated chase.
