One killed in Meghalaya bridge collapse

Shillong, July 9 (IANS) A government official was killed and 16 people were injured when a bridge under construction collapsed in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district Tuesday, an official said.

The incident occurred in Komalsigre area near Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills, some 240 km from here. The bridge was to provide connectivity to some villages in the region.

"An overseer of Meghalaya Public Work Department died on the spot, while 16 labourers were hospitalised with injuries," Vijay Mantri, district magistrate of East Garo Hills, told IANS.

The deceased has been identified as Lemingstone K. Marak.

Mantri said the condition of the injured was said to be stable. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
