Obama opposes Sochi Olympics boycott

Washington, Aug 10 (IANS) U.S. President Barack Obama has ruled out his country's athletes will boycotting the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia.

The boycott suggestion came after Russia passed an anti-gay law, reports Xinhua.

"I do not think it's appropriate to boycott the Olympics. We' ve got a bunch of Americans who are training hard, who are doing everything they can to succeed," said Obama Friday. "Nobody's more offended than me by some of the anti-gay and anti-lesbian legislation that we've been seeing in Russia."

Obama said he hoped a gay athlete would take home a medal.

The 2014 Winter Olympics would start in February in Sochi.
