NREGA award for Garo hills

Shillong, Feb. 2: Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district, a strife-torn area, has been recognised as one of the best in the country for implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme.

Deputy commissioner Vijay Kumar Mantri, who is also the district programme coordinator, received the award for 'high-level of employment generation in challenging circumstances' from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi at the 8th Mahatma Gandhi NREGA Divas Sammelan.

According to Mantri, the district has achieved an average of 90.39 mandays of work (out of 100 mandays), and provided total work equal to about 45 lakh mandays.

"These figures are one of best in the country. Nearly 17,770 households also received 100 days of employment," he said.

The Songsak community and rural development block, which is an insurgency-affected area, achieved the highest mandays, of 94.59. Samanda block, which is also another area hit by militancy, achieved more than 90 mandays.

Mantri thanked his predecessors ' D. Vijay Kumar and Pravin Bakshi ' who laid a strong foundation in implementing the job scheme in the strife-torn district.
