Washington, Dec. 30 (ANI): Instagram, which may have begun as a tool for hipsters to share vintage-filtered photos, is now increasingly being used by American politicians to give themselves more exposure, and its working.
The photo-sharing service was recently used by Newark Mayor Cory Booker to document a week he spent on food stamps.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel has highlighted appearances with Isaiah Thomas and President Obama.
According to the New York Daily News, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office used the social network to give the public a look into Hurricane Sandy relief.
Julie Wood, Bloomberg's Deputy Press Secretary, said that during the Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts, the mayor was doing a lot of visits and were not open to the press.
She added that, however, the office posted some pictures on Instagram so people could see what's he's been up to, and also see the devastation and the need for a big recovery effort.
Professor William Ward, who focuses on social media at Syracuse University, said that it's logical that politicians would turn to a more immediate, concise form of communication .
According to the report, the Mayor's press office first decided to add an Instagram account to the city government's social media arsenal - which includes Facebook, FourSquare, Tumblr, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube - a year ago in January 2012, just in time to share a photo of Bloomberg holding hands with Lady Gaga on New Years' Eve in Times Square.
The move came shortly after news broke that Instagram had become the largest mobile social network, and just a few days after Obama had joined the service, the report added. (ANI)
