Murali Kartik escapes unhurt in road mishap

Delhi Police said that a case could not be registered unless a complaint was filed by any of the two parties involved in the incident.

New Delhi: A car driven by former Indian cricketer Murali Kartik rammed into another vehicle in the early hours on Friday at the Chanakyapuri area in New Delhi, the police said. Kartik escaped unhurt while his wife Shweta suffered some minor injuries.

The passengers of the other car — Thiruvananthapuram-resident Sudeep and his driver Rajkumar — also sustained injuries. “Sudeep fractured his right hand,” said a police officer.

The former Test cricketer and his wife were returning from Taj Mansingh Hotel and were on the way to their residence in Green Park area.

The police said the airbags in Kartik’s car reduced the impact of the accident though both the vehicles got damaged very badly.

“Kartik, who was driving his Volvo car, stopped at a petrol pump on the early hours on Friday. After refuelling the car, he drove it towards Niti Marg via the slip lane. His car soon rammed into a Mahindra Xylo which was coming from the Indira Gandhi International airport and going to Mayur Vihar area in East Delhi,” the police officer told MAIL TODAY. A Police Control Room (PCR) vehicle rushed Sudeep and Shweta Kartik to the RML Hospital, where they were given the first aid treatment.

Sudeep, who fractured his right hand, later went to Pushpanjali Hospital in Vaishali, Ghaziabad, for further treatment, said the police.

The police later took both the vehicles — Kartik’s Volvo car and Mahindra Xylo — to the Chanakyapuri Police Station.

“Neither Murali Kartik nor Sudeep has filed any complaint with the police so far. We are still waiting for both the parties to record their statements with the police,” said a senior police officer on Friday.

The police officer said that a case could not be registered unless a complaint was filed by any of the two parties involved in the incident.

“We cannot do it on our own as it is not clear who was at fault at the time of the accident that happened in the wee hours on Friday,” added the officer.
