Mumbai Police gives Adnan Sami a week to explain irregular overstay in India

Mumbai, Oct. 15 (ANI): Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Special Branch, Mumbai Police, Sanjay Shintre on Tuesday confirmed that Pakistani singer Adnan Sami has been issued a notice to explain his irregular overstay in India since October 6, and said that they have given the artist seven days to respond.

" The Foreigners Act of 1946, Section 14 (B), has been implemented to send Adnan Sami a notice. The meaning of this notice is on October 6, his visa expired and he has overstayed. If he lives in Mumbai, he should have come in with an application for his visa extension. Till now, we have not received his application. After enquiry, we have found out that he has started the visa extension process in Delhi," Shintre said.

"The notice has asked him to give an explanation within seven days, and has told him to regulize the overstayed period if he needs to be in India or otherwise leave the country," he added.

Shintre also said that Sami's case is being treated like any other overstay in the country, and added that the Mumbai Police is vested with the right to grant a Pakistani citizen a 30 day extension of visa if it is needed.

"So, we have given him time, like we give anyone else. The Mumbai Police is vested with power to grant a 30 day extension of visa. There is a one-time $30 fine. After paying this amount, the irregular overstayed period will be regulized," he said.

Once Sami responds to the notice issued by him, the Mumbai Police will compile a report and hand it over to the Central Government to take action accordingly.

Meanwhile, Congress Party leader Raza Murad supported the step taken by the Mumbai Police and criticised Sami for being unaware about the laws of the country.

"If his visa is expiring and if Mumbai police has asked him to deport, then it is correct. Since he keeps traveling, he should know well what the rules are. ...He must respect the law," Murad said.

The singer-composer's last visa was valid from September 26, 2012 to October 6, 2013.

If Sami does not reply to the notice issued to him, the Ministry of Home Affairs would be informed for taking appropriate action. (ANI)
