Mumbai’s Favourite Desserts

From novelty items to the best-made classics, team Condé Nast India confesses its sins

What: Churros Where: Sanchos, Bandra How much: Rs 237 There are very few desserts that the men at your table will agree to split with you – churros is one of them. It’s like a doughnut but nicer and is sweet without being too clawing. Unfortunately it’s still a novelty item in Mumbai and Sanchos is pretty much the only place that makes them and do a darned good job of it. Maya Hari - Director, Conde Nast Digital   What: Baked Philly Cheesecake Where: The Tasting Room, Good Earth, Lower Parel How much: Rs. 200 It's a dessert every man and his sous chef claims to be able to make, but unless you've been to New York and tried the real thing, you could have been fooled into thinking that the mousse-based rubbish most places are serving is real cheesecake. It isn't, and there are only a handful of Mumbai venues that know how to make cheesecake. Among the best is the Tasting Room - its cheesecake is mouth-wateringly light, slightly fluffy and sits on a crumbly biscuit base. A super-fast sugar injection that goes down as easy as a fine wine Rodrigo Davies - Editor, GQindia.com   What: Mysore Pak Where: A. Rama Nayak, near Matunga Station How much: Rs 150/kilo Here’s a street side stall, in Mumbai’s former Tamil hub of Matunga, that serves the most delicious ghee-dripping version of the classic South Indian sweet this side of the Western Ghats. Bite into a piece and the sugar rush alone will ensure all those calorie-counting, cholesterol-clogging thoughts are sent packing. An insider’s tip: get there early to avoid returning empty handed. Prasad Ramamurthi - Features Editor, Conde Nast Traveler India   What: Caramel custard Where: Britannia & Co. Ballard Estate How much: Rs. 80 Hidden away in south Mumbai’s European style business district, Ballard Estate, is arguably one of Mumbai’s most famous Parsi restaurants – Brittania and Co. Steeped in history, Brittania offers a host of authentic Parsi dishes, including the delicious Caramel Custard. Luscious in its presentation, the Caramel Custard is an absolute delight with the creamy custard and the mildly bitter caramel syrup blending in perfect harmony. For best results, ensure each bite has a bit of both. Neil Taskar - Product Manager, Mobile VAS   What: Fruit compote crepe Where: Suzette, Nariman Point How much: Rs. 186 Among the many charms of this tiny French creperie (it has a short menu that’s tall on taste) are its fresh fruit crepes with ice cream which are a great way to end a meal. Nutella is usually the most popular dessert crepe, but I rate the fruit compote higher. It’s fresh, tart, not too pulpy (i.e not just jam, masquerading) and just filling enough. Wash it down with a café noisette, and spend the next few hours in happy, caffeine-sugar buzz.  Divrina Dhingra - Editor, VogueIndia.com   What: Handmade hazelnut ice cream Where: Indigo Delicatessen, Colaba How much: Rs. 230 The sheer richness of this handmade ice-cream is unparalleled. They make it fresh every day and can even order it by the tub, although you will need to place an order 24 hours beforehand. There’s just the right amount of chocolate, rich cream and dainty little chips of hazelnut blended in with no one ingredient overpowering the other. If you love your ice-cream, wield your spoon and wave off unwanted pickers as you dig in. You won’t regret it. Neville Bhandara - Writer, Cntraveller.in   -Compiled by Megha Shah
