Pressure on Cook to make changes

New Delhi: England captain Alastair Cook, who played an innings of stature to resist an Indian win for nine-and-a-quarter hours in what proved to be a hopeless cause, is under pressure, as he faces widespread holler for major changes to the side following their nine-wicket defeat at Ahmedabad in the first Test of the four-match series.

After enforcing the follow-on, India bowled 154.3 overs in the second innings to dismiss England, and then chased 77 to take a 1-0 lead.

England's team selections have been highly consistent during Andy Flower's tenure as director of cricket but, on Sky TV, Sir Ian Botham openly questioned whether the England dressing room had become 'too matey matey'.

Botham called for Stuart Broad, England's one-day captain, to be left out among four changes to his preferred side for the second Test in Mumbai, but Cook did not immediately sound as if he had such an appetite for change.

"You can look at a number of reasons why we did not win the game, but we showed in our second innings that there were runs to be had out there," Cook said.

"We were in a tough situation and to get it into the final day always gave a glimmer of hope but it had to be something special. We fought hard and we can take a lot from the second half of our batting," he added.

"We have some great talent in our dressing room and we need to be keep playing as close to our potential as possible," he said.
