Modi lines up top names for Vibrant Gujarat summit

Ahmedabad, Jan. 8 -- The 6th Vibrant Gujarat Investment Summit, to be held on January 12-13, is fast acquiring national overtones, much in line with the buzz surrounding chief minister Narendra Modi's larger role in national politics.

Top industry captains including Reliance Industries Limited chief Mukesh Ambani and Tata Group head Cyrus Mistry are scheduled to attend the event, which the Gujarat government organises every alternate year, since 2003.

Delegations from more than 50 countries including the US and the UK would attend the summit with the theme "Sustainable development, innovation and forging partnerships for knowledge creation".

Besides signing MoUs with investors, the Modi government is aiming at bringing the industry, local as well as global, foreign diplomats and government authorities from different states together on a never-before-seen common platform.

"This is the first time Canada, Japan, the US India Business Council, the UK India Business Council and the Australia India Business Council are partners in an event organised by a state," Gujarat energy minister Saurabh Patel said on Monday.

State industry principal secretary Maheshwar Sahu said, "Seeking investment is not the only objective of the summit. We want to make it a hub for business and industry for the entire country."

MoUs will be inked for investment not only in Gujarat but also in other states.

A six-day trade show, starting on Tuesday, would be held across 100,000 square metres in Gandhinagar and see the participation of more than 1,000 companies from 14 countries.

Among the main events to be held is an international conference on academic institutions. Modi will address the gathering on "Vision of building world class institutions in India" on Thursday.
