Modi asks PM for safety of oil installations

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS) Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday asked the central government to implement recommendations made by the M.B. Lal Committee to prevent incidents like the recent fire at the Indian Oil Corporation's (IOC) Hazira plant near Surat.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Modi expressed serious concern over lack of public knowledge regarding status of the implementation of recommendations made by the committee.

The committee was formed after a fire at the IOC's plant in Jaipur in 2009. The inferno continued for 11 days and 11 people died and over 45 others were injured in the incident.

The committee submitted its report in 2010.

"The Hazira plant fire incident Jan 5 month has not only caused huge financial loss and disruption of oil supply but also led to the loss of three precious human lives and widespread panic in nearby areas," Modi said in the letter.

He called for giving prime importance to the safety and security of oil installations in the country to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
